We depart from Agios Nikolaos heading east, with the Gulf of Mirabello stretching alongside us. The road follows the coastline, passing through Istron and some of the most beautiful beaches in the area — Karavostasi, Agios Panteleimonas and the famous Golden Beach of Voulisma — before reaching the traditional village of Kavousi.
From here, we climb towards the ancient Minoan settlement of Azoria, where one of the oldest olive trees in the world still stands — a silent witness to thousands of years of history.
The journey continues to the entrance of the breathtaking Richtis Gorge. We follow a shaded path through lush greenery, surrounded by water, rocks and untouched nature, until we reach the hidden waterfall of Richtis.
The walk is easy and suitable even for children, yet the scenery feels wild and untouched. At the end of the trail, the gorge opens onto a quiet pebbled beach, completing an experience that combines history, nature and authentic Crete.
